Character House Black Screen Fix: Opaque Background and Lost Transparency

The black background problem looks like this: your character appears and animates correctly, but it sits on a solid black or opaque rectangle instead of floating over your wallpaper. It is the most reported issue in the Steam discussions, and the developer has publicly said the cause is still being investigated.

Confirm you have this problem and not another

Three different complaints get mixed together in the discussion board. Check which one is yours before working through the list:

• Black or opaque rectangle behind the character. The character is fine, the background layer is not. This page covers it.
• No character at all. The app runs but nothing appears. Often the character has been dragged off-screen; use the taskbar reset added in the September update.
• Characters jumping between monitors while typing. A separate behaviour, reported by one player, and covered on the desktop modes page.

What players report

The reports share a pattern that is worth knowing before you start changing settings:

• The first day after installing the demo works normally, then the background turns black on a later launch.
• Multi-monitor setups are heavily represented. One player with three monitors said only the third screen rendered correctly, with the main and second screens black.
• One Linux user described the same thing: customisation and interaction work, but the characters sit on a black background.
• A Chinese-language thread reported the background turning black the day after a normal first launch, making other programs hard to use.

The developer replied to that thread in Chinese, saying the issue is still being investigated and asking for a little time. No root cause and no timeline have been published since.

The checklist to work through

Work down this list in order and stop when the background becomes transparent again.

1. Confirm the app is running and the character is on screen. If the character is missing entirely, reset it from the taskbar first.
2. Note which display is affected. If you have more than one monitor, check whether the problem follows the character or stays on one screen. That tells you whether the display is the variable.
3. Move the character to another monitor using the switch-monitor control in the right-click menu. If one screen renders correctly, keep the character there for now.
4. Try Windows compatibility mode. One player set the app to run in Windows 8 compatibility mode and launched it as administrator, and reported that the character then appeared with a light background instead of black.
5. Restart the app after each change. The transparency layer settles at launch, so testing without a restart tells you nothing.
6. Report what you see using the details below. The developer has been responsive in the discussion threads.

About that workaround

The compatibility-mode fix comes from a single report in a Chinese-language Steam thread. Nobody has independently confirmed it, and the developer has not endorsed it. In that same report the background became white or grey-green rather than transparent, so it is not a complete fix even for the person who posted it.

Treat it as something to try while waiting for an official fix, not as the supported solution.

What to include when you report it

The developer’s replies ask for reproduction information. Filing a complete report makes it far more likely to be actionable:

• Operating system and version.
• Graphics card and driver version.
• Number of monitors and their resolutions.
• Which monitor is affected, and whether the main display is among them.
• Whether the character was visible on the first launch after installation.
• Whether compatibility mode or administrator rights changed anything.
