Character House Keystroke Counter: What It Records and Why Players Worry
The Character House typing counter tracks keystrokes and clicks. Here is what the developer has said, what players dispute, and what cautious players do now.
Character House counts your keystrokes and mouse clicks. That total is not decoration: it drives the level-up loop and it is displayed while you work. It is also the most argued-about feature in the game, and the argument is worth reading in full because the developer has answered it publicly.
What the counter does
In the demo the counter behaves like this:
- Every key press and mouse click raises a running total.
- The total appears on screen, and one official screenshot shows it reading 100809 next to a row of typing characters.
- Reaching thresholds levels the character up and grants a skill point.
- The counter is on by default and, in the demo, there is no option to reset or disable it.
In the game’s own tutorial language, the character explains that every time you tap a key or click your mouse, it will count for you.
What players asked for
The longest thread on the Steam discussion board is about this feature, opened in September 2026, and it contains the same requests in different words:
- A way to reset the counter. The original poster pointed out that the total cannot be cleared.
- A way to switch it off. Multiple players said they would come back if they could disable it.
- Counting only in typing mode. A player who expected a session count was surprised that the number grows regardless of the mode.
- More transparency about what is counted. One player explicitly asked whether the app knows which key was pressed or simply that a key was pressed, and why mouse clicks also raise the total.
- Better options in general. Another player suggested word-count via the spacebar, or alternative productivity tools such as a Pomodoro timer.
Two reviews on the demo page raise the same thing, and one of them was marked helpful by fifteen people.
What the developer has said
The developer’s replies are short and consistent. Across two threads:
- Counting works the way comparable counting games do, and only runs while the game is running.
- All data is stored locally on the player’s own device.
- Aside from the official Steam and Unity SDKs, the game uses no network transmission.
- The team did not anticipate these concerns, and plans to improve the feature and add an option to turn the typing statistics off.
Suggesting that players wait for a future update or the full release if they are uncomfortable is also part of the developer’s answer.
The disputed part
One player reported that their counter had climbed a lot between closing and reopening the game, and concluded that counting continued while the app was shut. The same player reported the demo reinstalling itself in Steam, which the developer acknowledged as a real bug caused by an oversight.
The developer replied that they had not managed to reproduce the counter behaviour but would keep investigating, and pointed at the announcement that documented the startup-entry fix.
The same player then updated the thread to say that after following the startup fix, the counter no longer grew while the game was closed. They noted they were unsure whether the two issues were connected. The developer has not confirmed a link between them.
Where the “keylogger” wording came from
A review that has since been edited was originally written with stronger wording about the game tracking input. The author later rewrote that section, dropped the keylogger description and explained that they could not verify the claim themselves. That correction is part of the record and worth knowing, because the strongest version of the accusation was withdrawn by the person who made it.
Meanwhile another commenter made the opposite point: calling it a keycounter rather than a keylogger is the accurate description, and the two words should not be used interchangeably.
What a cautious player can do today
There is no built-in off switch yet, so the practical options are:
- Close the app when you do not want it counting, since the developer states that counting only runs while the game is running.
- If you uninstalled and still see installation prompts, clear the startup entry as described in the update announcement.
- Keep the app out of your startup list so you consciously choose when it runs.
- Watch the release notes for the announced option to disable typing statistics.
What is still unknown
- When the off switch will ship. The developer has promised it but given no date.
- Whether the full release will keep the counter on by default.
- Whether the counter will gain a reset.
- Whether mouse clicks will remain part of the total, and whether the distinction between key presses and key identity will be documented.
This page reports what sources say. It does not claim a security verdict either way.
