Character House Desktop Companion runs on macOS. The Steam store page keeps Windows and macOS in two separate requirement tabs, and both the free demo and the unreleased full game list a Mac version. The floor is macOS 12 Monterey or later.

The published macOS specifications

The store page lists these values under its macOS tab:

macOS minimummacOS recommended
Operating systemmacOS 12 Monterey or laterNot separately listed
ProcessorApple M1 or Intel Core i5Apple M1 or Intel Core i7

That is the complete macOS table. Memory, graphics and storage are not given separate macOS values, so the Windows numbers should not be copied across as if they were Mac requirements.

How that compares with Windows

These are the published Windows figures, side by side with the Mac ones:

Steam also lists Steam Cloud for the game, which means a character saved on one machine can follow your Steam account.

Apple silicon versus Intel

The processor rows are the interesting part. The minimum column accepts either Apple M1 or an Intel Core i5, and the recommended column raises the Intel side to a Core i7 while keeping Apple M1 listed. The straightforward reading is that the game runs on both architectures, and that Intel Macs need a faster chip than the Apple silicon floor to hit the recommended configuration.

The store page does not publish a performance difference between the two, so do not expect a frame-rate claim from this wiki either.

What is actually uncertain on a Mac

The published specifications are not the risk. The desktop overlay is. Character House draws a character on top of your desktop, which depends on the operating system’s window compositing rather than on raw processing power.

The black background and lost-transparency problem that players report has shown up in Windows and Linux reports in the Steam discussions. There is no equivalent Mac-specific report at the time of writing, which is not the same as a clean bill of health. Treat it as an unknown that has not been reported yet rather than a guarantee.

Steam Deck compatibility is listed as unknown, and that applies to the Linux side of things, not macOS.

How to check the current status yourself

Open the game’s Steam store page and look at the requirement section. If macOS is still offered as a tab next to Windows, the Mac build is still part of the release. If the platform list changes, it will change there first.

If your character does not appear at all after launching, first check whether it has been dragged off-screen, then use the reset option from the taskbar. If the character appears on a black rectangle instead, that is the transparency problem.
